Overview

Canyoning combines multiple adventure disciplines into one incredible experience: rappelling (abseiling) down waterfalls, sliding through natural rock chutes, cliff jumping into crystal-clear pools, and swimming through narrow gorges carved by centuries of flowing water.

Nepal's diverse terrain offers exceptional canyoning opportunities. The most popular locations include Jalbire Canyon (near Chitwan) and Sundarijal (in Shivapuri National Park near Kathmandu). Each canyon has its unique character — from towering waterfall rappels to exciting natural waterslides and deep swimming sections.

This adventure is guided by professional canyoning experts who manage all technical aspects, allowing you to focus on the experience. No prior rappelling or canyoning experience is necessary — comprehensive training is provided before each descent.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (September-November): The optimal canyoning season. Water levels are high enough for exciting slides and jumps but not dangerously flooded. Weather is stable with clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

Spring (March-May): Good conditions with moderate water flow. Warmer temperatures make the water sections more pleasant. Some canyons may have lower water levels, affecting waterslide experiences.

Winter (December-February): Canyoning continues but water is cold even with wetsuits. Best for those who don't mind cooler conditions. Some remote canyons may be inaccessible.

Monsoon (June-August): Most canyoning operations are suspended due to dangerous water levels and flash flood risks. Not recommended.

How It Works

Morning Departure

Depart early from Kathmandu (around 6-7 AM) for the drive to your canyoning location. Jalbire is about 4 hours; Sundarijal is just 1 hour from central Kathmandu.

Gear Up & Training

At the canyon site, you'll be fitted with wetsuits, harnesses, and helmets. Guides provide comprehensive training on rappelling techniques, communication signals, and safety protocols.

Canyon Entry

A short hike takes you to the canyon entrance. Your first rappel begins — typically a smaller waterfall to build confidence before the bigger descents.

The Descent

Progress through the canyon with a series of rappels (some up to 45 meters), natural waterslides, cliff jumps, and swimming sections. Guides assist at every obstacle.

Lunch Break

Take a break at a scenic point within the canyon for a packed lunch. Rest, take photos, and prepare for the remaining sections.

Exit & Return

Complete the final obstacles and exit the canyon. A short hike takes you back to the vehicles. Change into dry clothes and return to Kathmandu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is canyoning dangerous?

Canyoning has inherent risks, but with professional guides, proper equipment, and adherence to safety protocols, it's a managed adventure. Our operators have excellent safety records and only run trips when conditions are suitable.

What if I'm afraid of heights?

Many participants have height concerns initially. The rappelling system keeps you completely secure, and guides assist at every step. Most people find their fear transforms into excitement after the first descent.

How cold is the water?

Canyon water is cool to cold, especially in spring and autumn. Full wetsuits are provided, which keep you reasonably warm. On hot days, the cool water is actually refreshing!

Can I bring a camera?

Waterproof cameras (GoPro-style) are recommended. Regular phones and cameras should be left behind as they'll get wet. Some operators offer photo/video packages — ask when booking.

What should I bring?

Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, a change of dry clothes, a towel, water bottle, and sturdy sandals or water shoes. Operators provide all technical gear and wetsuits.
